First Citizens Bank started doing business in 1898 in Smithfield, NC.  Since that time, we have grown significantly and moved our headquarters to Raleigh.  We have enlarged our footprint to 20 states with over 571 branches and grown to 34 Billion in assets. Not only have we experienced impressive growth, but we have done it while maintaining our core values and remaining independent. Because of our long term business approach, I am proud to say First Citizens is on a short list of institutions that did not need or accept any tax payer funding through T.A.R.P.  We also are a leader in local, family owned businesses, as we are the largest family controlled bank in the nation, with our chairman & CEO Frank Holding Jr. being the third generation of the family to lead the bank. So, we understand the value of legacy and the importance of a good reputation.
