Workplace Harassment: Understanding Harassment in the Midst of Today’s Workplace Allegations

With workplace harassment allegations making headlines across the country, it’s time for companies to make sure that their employees understand what unlawful harassment is and what to do when they believe it is occurring. Presenting will be Travis Hockaday, partner with Smith Anderson. Hockaday focuses on providing employment-related counseling and risk management advice to clients in a variety of industries, both public and private. This workshop will feature case studies from actual workplace situations and a practical guide to understanding the types of conduct that may qualify as unlawful harassment. It also will cover:

What is unlawful harassment
What to do when you believe it is occurring
Ensure that managers and supervisors understand they have a personal stake in preventing harassment
How a company (and individual managers and supervisors) may be liable for it
The key steps for preventing harassment
Managing risk when it occurs
Useful approaches for handling harassment complaints correctly

Travis Hockaday is a partner with Smith Anderson in Raleigh. His practice focuses on providing employment-related counseling and risk management advice to clients in a variety of industries, both public and private, and identifying and managing employment-related issues in mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations. He is a frequent speaker on employment and labor law issues and regularly conducts training for human resources professionals and executive management. Hockaday is a co-author of the North Carolina Human Resources Manual, published each year through the NC Chamber.
