How Wake County Can Ensure Inclusive Economic Development

Each year, the Economic Development Forum highlights the growing attraction of Wake County and the Triangle as a major center for innovation. At this year’s event, examine why it’s critical to support all communities through economic development.

In the city of the future, economic development efforts will be successful only if  policies benefit all members of our communities. As regions face new realities of employment and job opportunities, it’s clear that equity, diverse economic activity, and community engagement are fundamental to these efforts.

Brooks Rainwater, senior executive and director of the National League of Cities’ Center for City Solutions, will address:

  • The future of work and economic development trends
  • The current state of economic mobility
  • What we're currently doing to support economic development for all of our citizens
  • What other innovative regions across the country doing to make economic development efforts more equitable
  • How we best create economic development opportunities across Wake County

As a strong advocate for vibrant and successful cities, Rainwater often speaks and writes on the subject, and has published numerous research reports and articles on the creation of innovative, sustainable, and livable communities. His recent research publications and interest have surrounded the sharing economy, open data, and the state of our nation’s cities. He has appeared in a range of media outlets, including CNN, NPR, Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. He also frequently contributes writing to publications such as Fast Company, The Guardian, Business Insider, and Tech Crunch.
