Addressing Anti-Asian Racism and Violence

Anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate crimes have spiked 150% since the pandemic began, according to a recent study by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University. Incidents related to the rise of anti-Asian racism date back to the early 1850’s and have continued to this day resulting in discriminatory rhetoric, violence, and fewer customers for Asian-run businesses. The AAPI community represents a geographically diverse continent, including Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, amongst other Asian origins (such as Hmong, Laotian, Thai, Pakistani or Cambodian).

This Courageous Conversation will focus on the prevalence of anti-Asian discrimination, from hate to microaggressions. We will learn about opportunities to move beyond awareness to allyship and advocacy. We need swift action from our entire business community to put an end to the racism and violence and support the empowerment of our Asian-American community.

Our keynote speakers will:

Introduce attendees to Asian American history through key events.
Highlight the missing or forgotten voices and histories of Asian and Asian American communities.
Contextualize the history of Asian Americans and its impact on current events and beyond.

Ricky Leung
Co-Founder and Senior Director of Programs, NC Asian Americans Together

Ricky is co-founder and Senior Director of Programs at NC Asian Americans Together (NCAAT). Ricky grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, and studied journalism and mass communication at UNC-Chapel Hill, concentrating in visual communication and design. He began his career in DC at National Geographic and at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, where he became more involved with Asian American grassroots organizers. Ricky returned to North Carolina in 2010 in hopes of bringing the Asian American experience to his home state and worked at NC Policy Watch, a project of the North Carolina Justice Center, before joining NCAAT fulltime.

Victor Betts
Libraries Fellow, NC State University Libraries

Victor Betts holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from San Jose State University with a focus in archival studies and preservation, as well as, a Master in Education from California State University, San Bernardino. He is currently a Libraries Fellow at North Carolina State University Libraries where he works in the Special Collections Research Center. Prior to working at NC State University Libraries, he worked as a Library Specialist at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His interests within archival studies and research include the intervening spaces of recorded history where we might find missing or incomplete information as it relates to historically marginalized and underserved communities along with counter-narratives.

We will also have a panel join us to discuss their experiences as members of the Asian American community, and what authentic allyship looks like to them.
