Learn About Attracting Foreign-Owned Businesses to the Research Triangle

Foreign-owned firms are a critical part of our state and regional economy. They employ more than 250,000 North Carolinians and have contributed more than $14 billion to the economy during the last 11 years.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to organize our 2^nd annual State of Foreign Direct Investment event this year and build off of the momentum and excitement from last year. We have an audience and business community that is curious and excited to learn more about foreign direct investment, but also, more broadly, about how global connectivity encourages economic growth and makes us more competitive.

This year, we are excited to welcome Marek Gootman as our keynote speaker. Gootman is a fellow and director of strategic partnerships and global initiatives at the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program.

Gootman’s focus is on bridging think tank perspective with real world action to increase the vitality of cities and metropolitan areas. He actively is engaged with policy development, demonstration projects, peer learning networks, and external relations. Gootman also leads the Global Cities Initiative, a project launched in 2011 aimed at helping U.S. and international metro areas strengthen their global economic connections and competitiveness. During his keynote, he will discuss growing globally: international trade and investment strategies to build competitive firms and economies.

Following his keynote, Gootman will moderate a panel discussion focusing on the future of FDI, and how local companies are positioning themselves globally to compete and grow on a global scale. You will hear from the following panelists:

Bob Messier, senior vice president of marketing and customer engagement, SAS Institute
Charles Vaillant, chief technology officer, MANN+HUMMEL
