Courageous Conversation - February 2020

Join us for a Courageous Conversation on Bias in Artificial Intelligence

We are excited to offer another session of our Courageous Conversation series. In this seminar, you will learn about the challenges surrounding bias in our growing usage of artificial intelligence.

Human implicit bias is well documented. For decades, the business community has made it a priority to reduce the negative effects of bias. Artificial intelligence is not immune. In October 2019, the Harvard Business Review stated, “Over the past few years, our society has started to wrestle with just how much these human biases can make their way into artificial intelligence systems – with harmful results.”

Learn how bias reveals itself in artificial intelligence and impacts our decision-making process. You will hear from Phaedra Boinodiris, fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and Sciences and a member of IBM’s Academy of Technology. She is the author of Serious Games for Business. Her work is used to teach students the fundamentals of business optimization.

Our conversation also will address and examine ethical AI, including a look at culture change, governance, and tech responsibility. You will hear from these speakers:

  • Alan Cross, chief commercial officer, Diveplane Corporation
  • Jane Patterson, partner, Broadband Catalyst
  • Leigh Shamblin, director of leadership, Poole College of Management, NC State University
  • Deborah Watts, partner, Broadband Catalyst

Discuss strategies that businesses are implementing to reduce bias and deploy artificial intelligence systems that will avoid discrimination in decisions and behaviors.
