Join us for the Greater Raleigh Chamber’s 138th Annual Meeting, our biggest annual gathering of business, civic, and community leaders from across the region.

This year’s luncheon is a chance to celebrate the leadership, momentum, and community partnership that continue to shape Raleigh’s future. We will reflect on the past year, recognize the people making a real difference in our community, and look ahead to the work still in front of us.

This is one of the Chamber’s most anticipated events each year, and early registration is encouraged.

Program highlights include:
- Passing of the Gavel as Kristen M. Hess, Chair of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of HH Architecture, passes leadership to Mitch Perry, Chair-Elect and Chief Financial Officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina
- Presentation of the A.E. Finley Distinguished Service Award, one of the Chamber’s highest honors for leadership and service
- Recognition of the progress and accomplishments of the Chamber’s members and partners across the region
- A keynote address from Shane O’Kelly, President and Chief Executive Officer of Advance Auto Parts, Inc.

Featured Keynote Speaker
Shane O’Kelly
President and Chief Executive Officer, Advance Auto Parts, Inc.

As the CEO of one of the Triangle's largest public companies, Shane is leading through challenges and decisions familiar to many business leaders today.

As the leader of a local Fortune 500 company working through a major reset, Shane has had to make hard decisions, restore focus, and keep people aligned through a period of significant change. His message will be grounded in experience and focused on the realities leaders face when the pressure is real.

Attendees can expect a candid look at operational discipline, decision-making under pressure, and what it takes to keep a team moving in the same direction during difficult seasons.

He also brings a leadership background that is broader than many business audiences may realize. A West Point graduate, Harvard MBA, and former U.S. Army infantry officer, Shane has led across retail, distribution, and industrial businesses and now serves at the helm of Advance Auto Parts.

About Shane O’Kelly
Shane O’Kelly has served as Advance Auto Parts President and Chief Executive Officer since September 2023. In that time, he has led the company on a comeback journey with a strategy focused on delivering quality parts and excellent service to both professional and DIY customers.

Shane’s career has taken him across retail, distribution, and industrial businesses. Before his time in business, he spent seven years as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army, an experience that shaped his leadership approach.

Prior to joining Advance, Shane was the CEO of HD Supply, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Home Depot, Inc. He also previously served as the CEO of Home Depot Pro, formerly known as Interline Brands, Inc. Shane’s leadership experience also includes serving as CEO of PetroChoice, the nation's largest distributor of lubricants and lubrication solutions, and as CEO of AH Harris, a specialty construction supply distributor. Early in his career, he held other roles at The Home Depot and worked as an engagement manager at McKinsey and Company.

During Shane’s time in the U.S. Army, he graduated from both Airborne and Ranger schools and served as a rifle platoon leader and company commander. He completed numerous deployments with the 1st Cavalry Division and the 325th Airborne.

Shane holds a bachelor’s degree from The United States Military Academy at West Point and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. He resides with his family in Raleigh, NC.

Lead Better. Know the Region Better. Build Relationships That Last.

Emerging Leaders is an eight-week Greater Raleigh Chamber program for professionals who are building momentum in their careers and ready to take on more.

In a small cohort, participants gain clarity on how they lead, build relationships with other rising professionals, and hear directly from local leaders about the organizations, decisions, and challenges shaping the Greater Raleigh region.

The goal is simple: help participants grow as leaders while also helping them better understand the region they are part of and the role they can play in its success.

Why Emerging Leaders

Emerging Leaders is more than a speaker series. The program begins with an opening session focused on leadership style, strengths, and self-awareness. Participants take time to understand how they communicate, work with others, and show up as leaders.

From there, the cohort meets with local business and civic leaders who share real career lessons, leadership decisions, organizational challenges, and insight into the issues facing the region.

Participants also learn from one another. The small cohort format gives them space to talk about what is working in their own organizations, exchange ideas, and take useful practices back to their teams.

Each cohort is limited to 20 participants so the experience stays personal, practical, and discussion-based.

Since 2011, Emerging Leaders has helped more than 400 professionals strengthen their leadership skills, grow their networks, and better understand how they can make an impact at work and in the community.

What Participants Will Take Away

Through Emerging Leaders, participants will:

Better understand their leadership style, strengths, and growth areas
Learn practical ways to lead, communicate, and work with others
Hear real leadership lessons from Raleigh-area business and civic leaders
Build relationships with other rising professionals across the region
Discover local businesses, organizations, and leaders they may not have known before

Be able to attend orientation and at least four additional class sessions

Celebrating over a decade of leadership impact, Emerging Leaders, established in 2011, is a dynamic 8-week program designed to expand the capacity of tomorrow’s leaders. Limited to 20 participants each session, this exclusive cohort experience immerses professionals in leadership strategies, emerging local trends, and peer-driven learning in an intimate, high-impact environment.

As Vice President of Project Development, Matt Chambers leads market positioning and growth efforts for Clancy & Theys, with a focus on the Triangle market. He works across all divisions to strengthen client relationships, guide long-term planning, and position the company for sustained growth.

With more than 30 years of construction industry experience, Matt brings a well-rounded perspective shaped by roles as both a subcontractor and construction manager. Throughout his career, he has led operations, business development, safety, marketing, and diversity initiatives, always prioritizing collaboration and client success.

Matt is actively involved in advancing the construction industry and serving his community. He served as the 2025 Chair of the Carolinas AGC Building Division and is Co-Chair of the NC AIA/Carolinas AGC Joint Committee. He also serves on the WakeMed Foundation Board of Directors and the Wake County Economic Development Board. That’s not all, however: Matt’s complete list of organizational memberships and community involvement initiatives is simply too long to list here.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys spending time with his family and cheering on the NC State Wolfpack.

Give Back at Our Bi-Annual Community Involvement Day
Join fellow Young Professionals Network (YPN) members for a day of service with Habitat for Humanity Greater Raleigh. Together, we'll work alongside Habitat staff, volunteers, and future homeowners to help build safe, affordable housing right here in our community.

You don't need construction experience—just a willingness to learn, lend a hand, and be part of something meaningful. Habitat volunteers often say they come expecting to build a house but leave having built friendships, gained new skills, and experienced the power of working toward a shared purpose. Every hammer swung and wall raised helps create the foundation for a family's future while strengthening our own connection to the community. Whether you've volunteered on a build site before or this is your first time picking up a tool, this is an opportunity to step outside your daily routine, work alongside fellow members, and make a lasting impact!

Agenda:
7:40 a.m. - Meet at Greater Raleigh Chamber to Carpool to Build Site
8 - 8:10 a.m. - Volunteer Check-In and Registration (Please arrive promptly so we can begin on time! For safety reasons, late arrivals may be turned away.)
8:15 a.m. - Volunteer Orientation and Safety Overview, Tasks Assigned, Workday Begins
11:30 a.m. - Noone - Lunch Break (Lunch is not provided.)
3 - 3:30 p.m. - Site Cleanup

What To Wear: Wear good work shoes – boots are best, sturdy sneakers are fine. No sandals, open-toed or open-heeled shoes, or light canvas-type shoes. Wear clothes that can get dirty. Avoid loose-fitting or baggy clothes. Dress according to the weather! Have a good hat and an extra shirt on hot days and dress in warm clothes and layers on cold days. Sunscreen is essential for most days in March through October.

Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Don Mial is a lifelong public servant who is excited to represent District 1, which includes parts of Knightdale, Rolesville, Wendell and Zebulon. He grew up in a farming community in eastern Wake County before going on to have a distinguished 30-year military career, followed by an extensive career in law enforcement and juvenile justice, as well as teaching at community colleges. He has served on many local board, including the Wake County Board of Elections and Wake County Board of Adjustment. He was elected as a commissioner in 2022 he has served as Vice Chair, and is now honored to serve as Chair for 2026. He frequently works on issues impacting farmers and veterans. When he has time, Chair Mial enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf and riding motorcycles.

Starting a business and leading it through growth require different skills. Kristen M. Hess, FAIA, has spent more than 20 years learning how to do both, and now she is joining us for our bi-monthly C-Suite Perspectives series.

Kristen founded HH Architecture in 2005 and has grown the firm to nearly 50 employees. Its portfolio includes several well-known projects across North Carolina, including the Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center and expansions at the North Carolina Zoo. As she completes her term as Chair of the Greater Raleigh Chamber Board of Directors, Kristen will share what she has learned about building a company, developing a team, and taking on a larger role in the community.

About Kristen M. Hess, FAIA

Kristen is the founder and owner of HH Architecture. She was named the 2022 North Carolina Small Business Person of the Year and was elevated to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows, an honor held by approximately 3% of AIA members.

Her leadership also extends beyond her firm. Kristen has served as Chairperson of the Greater Raleigh Chamber Board of Directors and participated in the Eisenhower and Marshall Memorial Fellowships. She supports HUB and MWBE businesses and has remained active in mentorship, including her work as a Girl Scouts troop leader.

Patricia Burch joined Habitat for Humanity Greater Raleigh in October 2022 after working for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham for more than 15 years and in the Executive Director role for four years. During her time with Habitat Birmingham, Patricia served as the President of Alabama Association of Habitat Affiliates as well as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Central Alabama Housing Alliance. Currently, Patricia serves on the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. She also serves on the Board of Habitat for Humanity North Carolina and on the Board of Building Independence. Originally from Pensacola, Florida, Patricia holds a B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of West Florida. Patricia has extensive experience in affordable housing and knows the transformative power of a safe, stable place to live. She is focused on building strong teams and finding innovative solutions to meet the growing need for affordable housing in our community. She is passionate about creating sustainable, lasting change for families in Wake, Johnston and Franklin counties.

Rick is in his 49th year of his automotive aftermarket career, the majority of it on the distribution side of the industry following his initial years with a national CPA firm.

He began his involvement in the aftermarket as the controller/treasurer at a Parts Plus automotive warehouse distributor and auto parts store company in Michigan in 1977. Shortly thereafter, the distributor became a CARQUEST Auto Parts member.

After the organization was acquired by General Parts/CARQUEST (GPI) in the mid-eighties, Rick worked for GPI in a variety of senior management positions including treasurer, corporate controller, vice president of strategic planning and analysis, and chief financial officer. He retired from GPI at the end of 2011 and formed his own business advisory services company that works with a variety of clients in attaining their financial strategies.

In addition to his Bourke Services, LLC activities, Rick is a partner with Schwartz Advisors, an industry consulting and mergers/acquisitions firm. Through it, he serves as a financial analyst resource and sell-side/buy-side advisor to aftermarket enterprises.

Rick earned his BBA from Western Michigan University and a Masters of Business Administration from the DeVos Graduate School of Management at Northwood University.

Rick has his CPA certification and continues to be very involved in the aftermarket and auto care industry as an adjunct professor for the University of the Aftermarket, an industry sponsored continuing and leadership education institution. He also is engaged in his community and region, serving on various nonprofit and for-profit boards including the Board of Trustees of Northwood University.

He will also be recognized later this year by WakeEd Partnership with the Vernon Malone Friend of Education Award for his continued commitment to public education. Gary has also been previously recognized by the Triangle Business Journal as a CEO of the Year.

Gary was born and raised in Raleigh and graduated with honors from North Carolina State University with Bachelor of Arts in both business management and economics.

Kristen M. Hess, FAIA is a business owner, architect, international fellow, and community organizer. Driven by her passion for sustainable design and an advocacy-centered approach to working with clients, Kristen started HH Architecture in 2005. Since then, her business has grown to nearly 50 employees and has designed landmark projects like the Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center, major additions to the NC Zoo, and numerous buildings that serve the communities across North Carolina. Kristen was named the 2022 North Carolina Small Business Person of the Year and her company was named 2022 Firm of the Year by the American Institute of Architects NC. In 2024, Kristen was elevated to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects, a distinction bestowed on less than 3% of architects

An active volunteer, Kristen has donated countless hours to non-profits, helping students, mentoring entrepreneurs, and serving as a role model to young women and girls. Kristen began her Girl Scout career as a young girl in western North Carolina, earning her Gold Award in 1992. She has also served as a troop leader and says her love of Girl Scouts and her belief in its tenets have guided her throughout her life.

Internationally, Kristen has represented the United States and the architecture profession through the Zhi-Xing China Eisenhower Fellowship and the Marshall Memorial Fellowship. Locally, she supports women and minority-owned businesses through her appointed positions on the NC Governor’s Council on Historically Underutilized Businesses and State Building Commission, as well as her service through the Raleigh Chamber. Kristen is a graduate of the NC State University College of Design and has lived in Raleigh for more than 30 years.
