Get Tech. Learn Tech. Give Tech.

About us

Kramden Institute: Providing Technology Tools and Training to Bridge the Digital Divide. Kramden was founded in 2003 with the goal of getting personal, home computers to deserving students in grades 3-12 in need of one. Since then, thousands of volunteers have helped refurbish and give over 30,000 donated computers to students across 84 of the state’s 100 counties. We cultivate both private and public organizations to donate their used computer equipment to Kramden which we then refurbish and award through our various hardware programs. Currently, we provide approximately 4,000 computers annually to students, adults and other nonprofits in need. In 2013, Kramden revamped its strategy to begin offering digital literacy and tech education programs to members of our communities in order to complement our computer hardware programs. We came to the realization that owning a computer without being able to effectively use one was not actually closing the digital divide. In the time since, thousands of adults and students have gone through our various STEAM programs, learning everything from the basics of operating a computer to programming and designing their own video games. We currently offer digital literacy training across numerous public housing sites in North Carolina ranging from Charlotte, the Triangle, Fayetteville, Wilson and more.

👨💻 Have you ever donated or used a refurbished computer before? Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes? 👩🔧 Duke Tech Policy Club members volunteered at Kramden Institute last month and learned just that! The Kramden Institute works to promote digital equity in North Carolina by providing the relevant technological tools and training. As part of the visit, volunteers worked on speccing- recording specifications of a machine to check for conditions and potential repair. It was a fun experience for our members and gave them an opportunity to contribute to a local nonprofit's work! The Duke Tech Policy Club regularly organises multiple such events every year to provide our members with memorable experiences, useful skills and networking opportunities. #techpolicy #socialimpact #techforgood

On March 23, Computer Basics participants with Cocompts celebrated their completion of the course. Each participant received a certificate and a refurbished laptop from Kramden. Representatives of Kramden and Charter-Spectrum attended the celebration and heard from Sifa Bulankay about the impact this course has had on her community. Course participants were proud of their achievements and eager to continue improving their digital skills! We would like to thank Charter-Spectrum for providing funding for the Computer Basics courses with Cocompts.

On March 6th, volunteers from @ABB visited Kramden to help prepare devices for distribution. ABB volunteers worked alongside Kramden staff to test, clean, and refurbish laptops that will be awarded to low-income households in North Carolina. Volunteers are essential to our operations. They allow us to quickly process computer donations that will then be put in the hands of students and adults who need them for education, work, and more. Thank you to ABB for spending time with us last week to advance digital equity in our state. #ABBinthecommunity #givetech #gettech #volunteer #geekathon
