Learn and Go: HR for the Small Business

HR-related mistakes can have devastating costs for a small company. Costly litigation, compliance issues, and employee replacement costs are just a few unwanted outcomes. Unlike larger organizations with their teams of dedicated HR staff, small organizations often are forced to fend for themselves.

This hour-long webinar will address several key HR-related challenges facing small businesses:

  • No dedicated HR staff: Most small businesses either assign HR responsibilities to a cross-functional manager or to a single, in-house HR administrator. In either scenario, a single person handles payroll and benefits, time tracking, employee complaints, disciplinary action, hiring, promotions, and so forth.\
  • As a result, there often tends to be a true lack of HR-related subject matter expertise on hand. Worse yet, the HR focus is entirely focused on the tactical, day-to-day HR transactions rather than a strategic approach to build talent and drive business performance.
  • Record-keeping and regulatory compliance: In North Carolina, HR regulations are in a constant state of flux. Small businesses must balance record-keeping requirements with ever changing healthcare reform, tax codes, and labor laws.
  • Employee attrition: Without a strategy for investing in talent and building an attractive work culture, small businesses tend to lose good employees to competitors that offer higher salaries and better benefits. Small business are often more vulnerable to the loss of one key employee.
  • Systems limitations: Oftentimes, the search for technology and HR systems is a daunting proposition for smaller employers. As you grow larger, the need for buttoned-down processes and automation grows with you.

You will learn how to avoid making six common mistakes that plague small businesses:

  • Not Hiring the Right People for the Job
  • Not Creating Clear Job Descriptions
  • Not Addressing or Documenting Performance Issues
  • Not Understanding Basic Employment Laws
  • Misclassifying Your Employees
  • Neglecting to Develop your People
